Last-Minute Gift Ideas

Inexpensive Gifts in a Hurry

From , former About.com Guide

No matter how good you are at making lists, there's always someone you forget to buy a gift for (or didn't think you had to buy a gift for!). Whether you've waited until the last minute to buy something for your significant other, or just need some small tokens for co-workers, these inexpensive gift ideas will come to the rescue. Best of all, you can likely avoid the mall - if it's even open by the time you're reading this!

1. Locally-Grown Gifts

For out-of-state recipients, you can put together a great gift with a few items from your grocery store. Most have a "local" section, where you will find traditional state foods, jams, spices, condiments, etc. Look for items that fit in a theme (everything you need for Texas chili supper or a Vermont breakfast, for example) and package in a nice gift bag or box with a note of explanation.

2. Inscribed Books

Avoid the mall and go straight for your neighborhood bookstore. Find a nice hardcover book on a topic that interests your giftee. To make it more personal, inscribe the book with a thoughtful note before you wrap it.

3. Spa Services

Everyone loves a little pampering, so find a nearby spa and order a gift certificate (choose a dollar amount over a specific service if you are unsure what to buy). If one cannot be emailed to you (or mailed in time), work a little magic on the computer and print up a gift card yourself. Enclose a few spa-like items from the drugstore with the card (nail polish if you are sending her for a manicure, a loofah if a body scrub is on the agenda) to make it look like you spent a little more effort on the gift.

4. Gift-of-the-Month Clubs

From wine and cheese to books, cigars and movies, you can find a gift-of-the-month club for anyone on your list. Make your own gift card explaining the service to the recipient, and no one will even know you waited until the last minute!

5. Charitable Donations

We all have too much stuff as it is, so consider making a charitable donation in someone's honor instead. Call your local SPCA or library, or visit Charity Navigator to find a reputable local, national or global organization.

6. Gift Cards

No one will think you put a lot of effort into this gift, but who cares? Hit the grocery or drugstore and fight the other last-minute shoppers for your pick of dozens of gift cards, in categories ranging from clothing to home repair (and everything in-between).

7. Get Baking

Reach for Mom's cranberry bread recipe, find the fastest fudge recipe you can get your hands on, or make a few extra batches of your favorite holiday cookies. Package prettily (dishtowels make great wrapping paper!) and enclose the recipe or a personal anecdote about what the treat means to you and your family.
