Teachers aren't always known for their sense of style. The career doesn't call for it - being constantly surrounded by students and their messes, always working on their feet not to mention a salary that cannot afford them expensive clothing to wear to work. As busy as teachers are, who has time to put together the perfect outfit?
Never fear, teachers! Even though it may sound easier said than done, here are some simple tips that will help you prepare for the school season!
Here's How:
- CLASSIC PIECES ARE KEY
Create a wardrobe with classic pieces that can be worn with different outfits; for example, a crisp white shirt or black pants. Sounds boring, but believe me when I say that these pieces can be mixed & matched with other wardrobe pieces to create multiple looks.
- LOOK FOR THE DISCOUNTS
There are plenty of retailers out there who offer teacher discounts as long as you have valid identification. The best thing is that these discounts are offered year-round! Stores like Ann Taylor LOFT have specific programs. So make sure you ask when you are shopping your favorite store.
- DON'T BE AFRAID TO SHOP THRIFT STORES
... or as I like to call them - Vintage Stores! You can find a world of great finds at your local thrift store. Depending on the location, you may even find designer goods there. You just have to read the labels. Thumb through the rack to get a taste of what's there. You can probably feel the difference between high quality fabrics and cheaper blends.
- GOOD DEALS EXIST ONLINE
If you have the time, shop online! This way you can shop in the comfort of your own home and you can do this at any time of the day. This type of shopping can surely fit into your hectic schedule. Try websites like eBay for bargains. Sites like Gilt Group, Rue La La, and Hautelook always have clearance sales with up to 80% off designer apparel and accessories.
- LAYER YOUR LOOKS
Classrooms are similar to office buildings where you never sure what the temperature may be like, if the air conditioner is working or if the heat is going to kick in. Layer your look with cardigans, blazers, scarves - whatever works well with your look. There is nothing better than being able to take things off without looking inappropriate when it is hot or add things to your look without looking like you are bracing for the winter storm indoors.
- WEAR STYLISH, COMFORTABLE SHOES
Yes, you are on your feet all day. But just because you want comfort does not mean you have to buy the ugliest shoes around. Wear stylish, yet sensible shoes like wedges, flat boots and ballet flats to complete your outfits. Visit comfort shoe stores like Aerosoles which offer teacher discounts.
- USE ACCESSORIES TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
Accessories are another quick and easy way to transform an outfit. Belts can change an outfit and oversize bags are great for teachers. They carry everything!
Tips:
- Embrace fashion & trends. Look to online resources for keeping up with the trends. Saves you from purchasing actual magazines that hold the same information.
- Dress fashionably, but not too trendy. Look age-appropriate at all times; you don't want to get confused for one of your students!
- Try to find something washable as well as versatile for the many jobs teachers find themselves doing during the day.
- Buy a few nice sweaters, cropped jackets, and a white blouse; it goes with everything from pants to pencil skirts. You can mix & match to create different outfits.
